One of the most exquisitely beautiful cities in Europe lying midway between Brussels and Bruges and situated on the banks of the River Leie and the Scheldt.

Ghent Essentials |
Castle of the Count - An awe inspiring castle with architecture to match. From count's residence to cotton spinning mill, this impressive site has a captivating history. It also carries a unique collection of historical weapons and torture instruments.
St Bavo's Cathedral - Dates back to the 10th century and is the oldest parish church in Ghent. The church was dedicated to St. John the Baptist and was rebuilt and enlarged in the 11th century.
The Belfry - After several suspensions due to wars and other tribulations, construction of this interesting tourist attraction was finally completed in 1380. During the course of the centuries, the building had 7 different crownings, adapted to the growing number of carillon clocks.
City Hall - Since 1301 the Ghent magistrate took control of the administration of the city along with 13 aldermen who dealt with issues regarding inheritance and guardianship. This magnificent building was raised in Renaissance style and then fashioned in the Italian palazzo style.
The Alijn Children's Home (now House of Alijn) - In 1363 after a feud between two families, the Rijm family were pardoned for the murder of Hendrik and Zeger Alijn on condition that they open a children's home for the shelter and care of poor people. Since 1962, the Gothic/Renaissance cottages have accommodated the Museum of Folklore. |
