We drove to the small villages around Kortrijk and the medieval village in Courtrai/Kortrijk should not be missed. De Gouden Bank in the village of Gullegem, is a great pub where the locals are so friendly, we had a great time there.

Kortrijk Overview
You will be instantly caught up by the charm of this medieval town which is the economic and cultural centre of the south of West Flanders. Kortrijk is filled with history, cultural heritage, festivals and fabulous night life not to mention its reputation for superior education (Leuven University).

The Battle of the Spurs in 1302 was revenged in 1382 and the city was completely battered after the Battle of Westrozebeke. In the succeeding centuries, one siege or occupation was followed by another, however, today, Kortrijk is an economic centre of note attracting many high profile industries and a metropolis of hotels, boutiques, shops and restaurants as well as many must-see tourist traps such as the? museums and galleries.

Kortrijk Essentials
Our Lady Church - was originally built during the 13th century inside the walls of the first medieval castle and the remains of the castle walls are still visible. This church is one of the oldest buildings in Kortrijk and is simply quite beautiful.

Beguinage – is said to have been founded in the 13th century. There are about forty little houses in baroque style in this Beguinage and the house of the superior (1649) is now a museum dedicated to life in the Beguinage.

Broel Museum - This museum is situated near the Broel Towers and carries an expansive collection of paintings and sculptures by the people who lived or worked in Kortrijk. This museum represents art history, from the 16th century to present day.

Ypres/Ieper – This 2.6km walk on the ancient fortress around the city is not to be missed. Walk along the 'Vestingroute Ieper' and follow the many informative signs where you will learn about the history of the town, the transformation from medieval to French fortress as well as the local fauna and flora.

Belfry – is the remains of the former medieval Cloth Makers’ Hall founded in the 14th century. The foundations of the Belfry date from the 14th century and in the 16th century the top section was replaced by the spire that proudly bears the four turrets.

Kortrijk Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events
Eurodogshow (November) – An international annual event for pedigree dog breeds only. Approximately 51 judges from 14 countries are present and whether you are a canine lover or not this is well worth attending.

The Wedding Show (January) – Another international annual event which is gigantic and absolutely stunning. Even the men will be bowled over.
