Useful Tips |
| Parking - by John from Bassetlaw |
| Arriving by was simple enough and you can park basicaly in the centre in a large underground carpark from which you emerge into one of the main squares. The parking fee seemed quite expensive to me, but maybe it's even more during "peak" times as we were there in the evening. Getting around is pretty simple - quite a small and compact city, so you can walk mostly. |
Leuven Overview |
30 minutes outside Brussells you arrive in this enchanting town, the principal university town of Belgium and home to the prestigious University of Leuven founded in 1425.
Leuven suffered badly during the World Wars but is now an up-to-the-minute city with a rich heritage, which captivates visitors from all over the world. Best known internationally for its superlative architecture, buildings and world renowned beer you will also find a blossoming party ethnicity which would certainly appeal to the young at heart as well as plenty of museums, city parks, art exhibitions, market places, interesting shops, galleries, pubs and eateries. |

Leuven Essentials |
The Saint-Peter's Church - The oldest in Leuven was founded +- 986. The Treasury of Saint Peter is housed in the church as well as 236 statues and this church is a marvellous example of pure Brabantine and Late Gothic Style.
St Gertrude’s Church and Abbey - Constructed during the 13th to 15th century and said to be one of the seven wonders of Leuven because its tower was built without securing pins. The abbey which belonged to the Augustinian Order has extremely interesting buildings (14th-/17th century).
Kruidtuin - Botanical Garden – Is known as the "Herb Garden" and is the oldest in Belgium, dating from 1738. In the 2,2 hectares, one can find an enormous collection of flora and fauna and there are regular exhibitions in the orangery, gate way and in the open air.
Great Beguinage and Faculty Club - Founded in the 13th century outside the town wall. The oldest houses date from the 16th century and the Gothic church has been dedicated to St. John the Baptist.
Chess Cafe – A 5-star chic restaurant at 1a Fontein Street specialising in “wok” meals. You simply choose your fresh ingredients, give them to the chef telling him which sauce you would like and your food is returned absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. |

Leuven Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
International Short Film Festival (November/December) – This is a fantastic annual event devoted to short, live action films.
Marktrock (August) - One of Europe's major urban music festivals which, each year, attracts over 350,000 visitors to its wide range of pop and rock music. This is an ever popular summer event. |
